Sung Mo Kim

Sung Mo Kim is a reporter who joined the Chosun Ilbo Daily in 2006. The Chosun Ilbo Daily, whose centennial was in 2020, is the largest and the most subscribed newspaper in South Korea.

He majored in Mass Communication, Political Science and Diplomacy at Yonsei University. He worked as a reporter for 15 years, covering various issues including social policy and economy.

He recently took on the position of team leader of the ‘Covid 19 team’ at the Chosun Ilbo Daily and led the coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic in Korea. He has covered the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Korea. He is particularly interested in the importance of Communication in the era of COVID 19. His research project is about the ‘Role of Mass Media & Communication During COVID 19 Outbreak’.

Andy Doowon Ahn is a staff writer at the Maeil Business Newspaper of the MK media group. He has covered military and security issues regarding the Korean peninsula and the East Asian region since 2012 while serving as a member of the Press Corps of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Korea. He was in charge of the security, diplomacy and reunification team at the newspaper as well. He has focused on military strategy, defense industry, the Korea-US alliance and Korea-China-Japan trilateral relations. For the past 20 years, he has written stories ranging from society, politics, overseas news to culture. He graduated from the Department of History at Yonsei University. He also served as an Airforce Officer (OCS).

Ms. Marta Bocharnikova is a Fulbright scholar at GWIKS. She has focused on Korean studies since her B.A. and is currently a PhD candidate at National Research Tomsk State University, Russia. In her PhD thesis, Marta explores the formation of presidential political leadership in South Korea and its influence on South Korea’s policy towards the U.S. Her broader research interests include security in Northeast Asia, South Korea-Russia and South Korea-U.S. relations, smart cities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since her B.A. studies, Marta has been actively involved in many Korea-related conferences, seminars and workshops held by the Korea-Russia Business Council (KRBC), the Korea Foundation, Yonsei University, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), SOAS University of London, among others. Her scholarship was highly assessed by such established funds and international programs as Oxford Russia Fund (four times during 2014-2019), Academy of Korea Studies (2015), the Korea Foundation (KF Fellowship for Korean Language Training in 2017, KF Scholarship for Graduate Studies in 2019, KF Fellowship for Field Research in 2021), Erasmus+ exchange program at Goldsmiths University of London (2019), and the Fulbright Program at the George Washington University (2021-2022) to name a few. To apply her knowledge in practice, Marta successfully completed internships at East Asia Department of Ministry of Industry and Trade in Moscow (2019) and the Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Korea (2021). She also was a visiting researcher at the Sejong Institute in 2021 where she conducted research for her thesis. Before that, she participated in three Korea-Russia Youth Dialogues (KRD, 2017, 2019) as a Russian team leader and one of the authors of final resolutions. In addition to her academic research and studies, Marta volunteered at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and at the XXIX Winter Universiade 2019 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Jin Hyoung Cho is a senior reporter at The Korea Economic Daily. He has 18 years of experience as a journalist in many fields. Mr. Cho has mostly covered stories about the stock market, industries and the Ministry of Finance. He has also written stories about social issues and accidents as a Police team leader. Recently, he has been focusing on financial and capital markets and specialized in in-depth stories on economic issues. For the Lime scandal coverage, he was awarded ‘Journalist of the Year’ in 2020 by the Journalist Association of Korea. His research topic at GWIKS is “A Comparative Study on Financial Regulations in the U.S. and South Korea”.

Jeongho Jo is a Korean prosecutor. He has worked as an inspector in The Board of Audit and Inspection of Korea for 3 years and as a public prosecutor in various District Prosecutors’ Offices throughout Korea for 10 years. He has dealt with various cases; especially election cases, political cases, corruption cases, and defense acquisition investigations. Additionally, in charge of planning, he has also conducted research on the systems of the Prosecution and the politically impartial stance of the Prosecution. He will be conducting comparative study on the political neutrality of Korean and American prosecutors at GWIKS.

Kyuhae Jung is a chief writer and reporter of the Maeil Broadcasting Network (MBN). Since joining the Maeil Business media group in 2005, he has covered numerous areas such as politics, economy, social Affairs and so on. The National Assembly were his principal domains as a team leader. Also, he was Foreign Affairs and Defense, Prime Minister correspondent for two years. He was also in charge of economic ministries such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. He focuses on the US-China strategic competition and implication of South-North Korea.

Hyoun Soo Kim is a senior journalist who joined the Dong-A Ilbo in 2004 immediately after obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Business from Yonsei University. She also earned a Master’s degree in Economics from Yonsei. As a Journalist of Dong-A Ilbo, the national wide Korean newspaper, she has gained experience at the economy, political and business desk and specialized in Korean business industries such as tech, retail, and automobile. Currently, she is focusing on the impact of Geopolitics on Global Business and the Impact of Technology on Geopolitics.

Kyung Sung Kwon is a staff reporter (Deputy Editor of the International Affairs Department) at the Hankook Ilbo, a nationwide daily newspaper in Korea. He graduated from the Department of Communication at Seoul National University in 2002 and received a master’s degree in 2005. He has 14 years of experience as a journalist and has covered various issues concerning politics, economy, society and international affairs. He witnessed a series of historic incidents such as the summits between Kim and Trump and looked into the decision-making process of the Korean and U.S. researchers and officials for peace on the Korean Peninsula, leading the Foreign Affairs and Security Team for two years in 2018 and 2019. His research project is about ‘the Biden Administration’s Desired Approach to the Korean Peninsula and North Korea’s Nuclear Weapons Program’.

Ms. Sijeon Lee is a Korean prosecutor. She received her Bachelor of Law from Hanyang University in Seoul and the Certificate of Completion from Judiciary Research and Training Institute. She was appointed as a Korean prosecutor in 2007 and worked as a prosecutor for about 14 years in various District Prosecutors’ Offices throughout Korea. Working in the Department of National Security, Election and Labor for more than half of her tenure as a prosecutor, she has dealt with crimes related to national security and elections, and labor. In 2019, she was recognized by the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office as a professional prosecutor in the field of elections(The Blue Belt). To compare and study the electoral systems between South Korea and the United States, She will be conducting research on “A Comparative Study on Election Crimes and Their Punishment” at GWIKS.

Seungshik Yang is a staff writer at Chosun Ilbo newspaper. He majored in sociology and economics at Seoul National University. Since joining the Chosun Media Group in 2009, he has covered in various fields. He has recently dealt with issues in the political field. He was the National Assembly, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Foreign Ministry correspondent from 2014. Mainly dealt with domestic politics, military and North Korea related issues. He covered elections, legislation and the presidential system in domestic politics. Also interested in North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues, the South Korea-U.S. alliance, U.S.-North Korea relations, and inter-Korean relations.
